I jump from the stone at the beginning of the room to the first platform and, then, from the first platform to the second one, without a pause. You don't really need it.
All you have to do is duck on the stone when you land, positioning Rick at the right end of it, and DON'T jump immediately after the firing pass over your head, but just a bit later, so, when you do, you won't need to stop on the second platform and wait again, but, keeping on pressing the jump + left buttons, you'll arrive on the second platform without a stop. If you jump too early, this sequence of non-stop jumping won't work, of course.
I think this way is easier and funnier. I like these fast movements with which, using the right technique, you can overcome obstacles in Rick Dangerous, that's one of the main attractives of the game, to me.

I'll take your tactics then as I still fail a lot on this bit :) There are indeed some very fast movements required, and it keeps you on your toes, it's interesting on level 3 too how when you run out of bullets and/or dynamite and suddenly realise it makes you have to do some crazy jumping and/or dodging of the enemies, VERY fun :)
Oh, and congrats :) your gonna make me have to complete this darn game aren't you, just to try and keep up ;)

Anyway, the difference is very slight.
How the cock do you do that bit on level 2 with a laser firing left that kills you when you jump to the next platform? I used to know once. It's a mystery now.
Duck under the first firing then stand so your ready to jump it, then duck and wait for second and time your jump. I had to check the rzx for a good tactic after continually losing 4 or 5 lives on that bit. It's way hard at first :)
